Source material for this painting was a black and white pic my uncle must have taken of my dad when they were down on a fishing trip in the Everglades. They’d go to Everglades City and launch their boat and head out into the mangroves on the hunt for snook. I came home from elementary school one day and my mom took me up to her bedroom, and sat me down, and told me that the Coast Guard was out in the Everglades looking for my dad because she hadn’t heard from him since yesterday. Not to worry, they found him.
My brother and I were out there once with him. It started pouring down rain so we headed on in over some flats. We heard this loud whistling sound over the wind – the shallow sand had kicked the engine up, it was running dry, and the noise was the alarm sounding. So, of course, the engine died before we figured it out. We sat out there in the middle of the bay in the middle of NOWHERE outside of radio range. It was cold and raining hard and we were stuck. Fortunately, some fishermen came by and were nice enough to tow us a couple of hours back into Everglades City. They wouldn’t take any money, but Dad bought them a case of beer. Those were the days…
