Groupers love naps. Usually under a rock, but sometimes in a basket sponge. Really!
This Nassau grouper was snoozing in a basket sponge in Cozumel when I swam by it around 1990. My dive buddy snapped a pic, and I painted it on canvas seventeen years later. It was framed and displayed in a solo show at the Coconut Grove Gallery for a few years. The new owner didn’t see it there, so it came over to the Bahamas on a sailboat and hung at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge for about five years.
Hurricane Dorian took down the Lodge, but the manager had moved all my paintings from the dining room into his small apartment one floor up for safekeeping. I found them there about five months after the storm. All my other surviving Lodge paintings were eventually sold to collectors, but “Grouper in a Basket” is still waiting to find its forever home.
