Boats

My husband and I live on a boat for half of the year. So, I have a great affection for this lifestyle, which inspired me to paint many lots of boats! . I love sailboats resting in Hope Town Harbour under the candy striped lighthouse there, especially at sunset.

Can you guess where this is? The palms are moving. You can see it in the way the light won’t settle. The docks hold steady; the reflections don’t. Wind keeps interrupting them.

At first it reads as a familiar harbor scene — lights, pilings, the shallow glow of a place that stays awake after dark. Then the water starts doing something else. The reflections stretch and break into a pattern that doesn’t belong to the shoreline.

Orion’s Belt is rising in the east. Not just overhead — also in the water. It’s easy to miss if you’re looking at the sky. But once you see it, the painting shifts. The harbor becomes a mirror, and the night gets a second orientation.

This is Pete’s Pub from the water. Nothing dramatic is happening. The wind keeps moving the palms. The stars keep coming up, wheeling over us the way they do every night. Which is extraordinary, once you stop and notice.

  • Lost in the Everglades. Again.

    Lost in the Everglades. Again.

    Price range: $ 95.00 through $ 495.00

Source material for this painting was a black and white pic my uncle must have taken of my dad when they were down on a fishing trip in the Everglades.  They’d go to Everglades City and launch their boat and head out into the mangroves on the hunt for snook.  I came home from elementary school one day and my mom took me up to her bedroom, and sat me down, and told me that the Coast Guard was out in the Everglades looking for my dad because she hadn’t heard from him since yesterday. Not to worry, they found him.

My brother and I were out there once with him. It started pouring down rain so we headed on in over some flats.  We heard this loud whistling sound over the wind – the shallow sand had kicked the engine up, it was running dry, and the noise was the alarm sounding. So, of course, the engine died before we figured it out.  We sat out there in the middle of the bay in the middle of NOWHERE outside of radio range. It was cold and raining hard and we were stuck. Fortunately, some fishermen came by and were nice enough to tow us a couple of hours back into Everglades City.  They wouldn’t take any money, but Dad bought them a case of beer.  Those were the days…

Can you imagine yourself in a quiet anchorage after a long, windy day of sailing forty miles? This is our sailboat “Spirit” anchored at Allans-Pensacola Cay, Abaco, Bahamas.

The painting carries the feeling of a night that has already made its decision. The kind where you’ve made your waypoint, nothing more is going to happen today, and that’s a relief. There’s a physical ease to it, the sense of being supported by motion you don’t have to monitor. Your body remembers how to be still inside something that keeps moving.

Its tall, narrow format reinforces that intimacy. This isn’t a painting that spreads out or invites company. It feels personal, almost inward-facing, something encountered briefly but remembered clearly. A pause to rest, not the journey’s end.

Sweet Dreams holds the quiet satisfaction of being done for the day. Not accomplishment, not completion, just the permission to stop paying attention. It offers the simple comfort of being held by something steady enough that you can let go.

Sabine and I took our sunfish sailboats to Cracker Peas the other day to meet the hubbies and grab lunch.   Then we sailed back to our respective homes, where I washed “Lizzy” down and good and left her to dry at the dock.  She’s a great boat with a great history, and pretty beautiful sails IMHO.  A real sweetheart!

This boat was a contestant in the Sunfish World Championships in Nassau in 2009 which is the reason for the beautiful yellow, blue and black colors as well as the island motif which is a trademark of the Bahamas. She’s been owned by two friends of mine, and once a honeybee colony was discovered in her cockpit when the cover was removed. Her name is Lizzy due to a gecko that hitched a ride on the boat during a Hope Town sailing race. So, now you know the whole story.

Original is available, contact Kim for pricing.
