Sea Turtles

Sea Turtles are my favorite of all subjects to paint. I see at least one, every time we get in the Bahamian waters. These Sea Turtles like to go to the sea floor, and stick their head into a hole in a coral rock and sleep. In my paintings, I have tried to portray these amazing creatures in their natural habitats. Here, you can find a unique assortment of Sea Turtle Artwork of all sizes.

  • Bahamaland

    Bahamaland

    Price range: $ 95.00 through $ 12,000.00

    30×40″ · Acrylic on linen · page 13

“Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland…”

Inspired by the opening line of the Bahamas national anthem, this light-filled painting captures the quiet strength of a sea turtle rising through crystalline waters. Sunlight fractures across her back as she moves upward, powerful and unhurried. Beneath her, the reef hums with layered color — blues, aquas, and golds shaped by current and memory.

But there’s more here than meets the eye. Meaning drifts just beneath the surface, if you know where to look. Bahamaland is both a portrait and a hymn, a tribute to the sacred, living waters of a place I’ve come to call home.

    Bahamas National Anthem

    Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland;

March on to glory, your bright banners waving high.

See how the world marks the manner of your bearing!

Pledge to excel through love and unity.

    Pressing onward, march together to a common loftier goal;

Steady sunward, though the weather hide the wide and treacherous shoal.

    Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland;

‘Til the road you’ve trod lead unto your God,

    March on, Bahamaland!

  • "Morning Cruise"

    “Morning Cruise”

    Price range: $ 120.00 through $ 2,500.00

    10×10″ · Acrylic on birch · pages 22–23 (10×10 series)

From our porch we look out over Fry’s Mangrove, a little harbour that’s home to dozens of turtles. Most mornings, you’ll catch a small head break the surface, just for air, then gone again. No fanfare. Just a quiet nod that the day has started. Then another. Then two more.

This one caught the light on her way up. Gold and green catching the sun, shell mapped out like a piece of old stone.

Some mornings we sit with our coffee and count how many heads we spot. It’s a good way to start a day.

  • Sea Turtle Dream

    Sea Turtle Dream

    Price range: $ 95.00 through $ 4,800.00

    20×20″ · Acrylic on canvas · page 43

I painted this one on intuition, not a plan. The image showed up mid-painting, as if the turtle surfaced while the paint was already moving. The color went down first, loose and layered. Then came the sequins — stars and shapes and little bits and pieces, decorating instead of describing. Each mark answered the one before it — no hierarchy, just response.

The turtle isn’t really a subject here so much as a convergence — a moment when rhythm, color, and movement briefly agreed on a shape before moving on.

What’s left is sensation more than meaning. A form passing through, staying just long enough to be felt, then dissolving back into color and rhythm.

  • Going Home

    Going Home

    Price range: $ 95.00 through $ 1,490.00

Baby turtles fresh out of the sand at the crack of dawn, headed to their ocean home. I started this painting with a VERY dark umber ground (dark brown coat of paint), and added the lights on top.  The opposite of what I usually do!  Gradually, the painting got lighter and lighter. However, it took over a million brush strokes! (Probably exaggerating, but it felt like it). Giclees are available in ANY square size.   If it’s not here, just shoot me an email.

Giclee prints come gallery wrapped and ready for hanging. (If you want to frame it, please let me know and I’ll use skinnier stretcher bars). Original has been sold.

This was a little study for a bigger painting of mine called Poker Face.

I absolutely love painting sea turtles. Have you ever noticed their shells are patterned in hexagons, like a honeycomb? Bees and turtles, working from the same blueprint.

Sea turtles seem wise and ancient and mysterious to me, and they live all around me. If I had to pick one creature to stand for this place, and for me, it would be a sea turtle.

  • Child of the Sea

    Child of the Sea

    Price range: $ 95.00 through $ 3,250.00

    60×48″ · Acrylic on linen · page 6

I finished this painting in my newly built studio in Fry’s Mangrove in August 2019, sold it, unstretched it, and flew back to the US to have it photographed and attend a trade show. Two days after I flew out of Abaco, Dorian hit Hope Town.

Later I looked up the meaning of the name Dorian. It means “child of the sea,” and it symbolizes someone who embraces life with open arms. Come to find out, we embraced our new (wrecked!) life with open arms — many adventures, lessons, challenges, and, after three years, a brand new house. And that’s how this painting got its name: Child of the Sea.

    Original has been sold.

IF YOU INTEND TO FRAME a giclee, let us know and we will stretch on smaller bars, which will decrease your framing costs.

Giclees are printed on canvas and gallery wrapped around the edges, wired on the back, and ready to hang.

    Thanks!

  • Under Sam's Dock

    Under Sam’s Dock

    Price range: $ 95.00 through $ 1,380.00

On the south end of Elbow Cay, my friend Sam can stand on her dock and look down through clear water at a sea turtle moving below, one of many forms of life that move through this neighborhood each day. The turtle drifts diagonally through the frame, its broad shell carrying most of the visual weight of the painting, not centered or arranged, but simply passing by.

The shell is built from large, irregular plates holding muted shifts of olive, rust, and amber. Subtle variation from plate to plate gives the surface a mosaic-like complexity rather than a single uniform tone. The surface reads as layered and time-worn rather than polished.

Beneath the turtle, its shadow stays attached to the body’s movement and depth, confirming distance from the bottom, slow forward motion, and a physical relationship to the water column.

The surrounding water is clear and open. Small marks and pale blues suggest suspended matter and seagrass without turning the space into scenery or backdrop.

This is an active waterfront. People step onto docks, dinghies, and boats every day and see turtles, rays, fish, and sharks moving through ten feet of water as part of their normal visual field. The turtle is not a rare encounter, but something folded into daily life.

The painting is held together by the quiet gravity of a living body moving through a shared environment.

    50×60″ · Acrylic on linen · page 4

My husband, Mark, gave me an Olympus TOUGH underwater camera for our second Christmas together, and I used it to snap photos of sea turtles on Elbow Cay Reef while we were out hunting for lobsters. Those images bounced around in my head for quite a while, so when he left the island for a golf trip, I got down to business. I nailed a huge piece of canvas to the wall of our rental house and painted this turtle from the photos. It was a real relief to get that turtle out of my head and onto a 60″ canvas.

We used our sailboat to transport it to an art show two islands north of us — Treasure Sands Club’s Women in the Arts. Getting large paintings in, out, and around the cays is never easy, but, like they say, “If it was easy, anybody could do it.”

I think I’m going to name him Marco, for a dear friend of ours, an Italian art dealer and gallery owner.  He came to the Bahamas once and loved it, unfortunately, cancer took him before he could get back.  This seems like a perfect name.

A friend here on Elbow Cay posted a photo of her daughter snorkeling. I asked if I could paint her and added the turtle because she looked like she needed some company. And then love blossomed. I imagined what it would feel like — two young creatures, face to face, equally curious. I grew up underwater, and I remember that feeling. The foreignness of it. The wonder.

Then a few years later, an email: a couple had bought the giclée at the Hope Town art show. They were trying for a baby. They loved the painting, hoped their daughter would look just like her. She did. Her name is Sterling, and she swims with turtles in their bay.

    Some paintings just keep going.
