This was an early painting of mine. I painted large from the very beginning.
The real damselfish is a couple of inches at most, and every shallow reef has plenty of them. Nobody told HIM he was small. He guards his rock like a junkyard dog and will literally nip you if you get too close. If damselfish were any bigger, they’d be as feared as hammerheads, I swear. All that nerve and personality and color packed into something that could swim in a coffee cup.
The original hung in a house in Marsh Harbour, Abaco. When Hurricane Frances (or Jeanne, I forget which) came through in 2004, the house was destroyed around it and the painting was the only thing left standing. The owners marveled, rebuilt somewhere else, and I never did find out where the original ended up.
