Robert Genn was a Canadian oil painter and my early mentor. He wrote a weekly email newsletter called The Painter’s Keys that I lived for. He also wrote a little book called The Dreamway. His daughter Sara has kept the newsletter going, and you can read the entire book online on her site.
It starts: “She was speaking quietly to herself.”
The Dreamway is a state of mind, not a physical place. This painting reminded me of the many different characters one comes across while traveling through life. It flows from realism to abstraction and back again, landing on a school of fish.
The original comes with special hanging instructions. You must move the painting periodically between two or more spaces in your home or office: side by side on a big wall in the living room, then facing each other across a narrow hallway, then in two separate rooms entirely. They are meant to rove. You will find out why when you bring it home.
