This painting sat in my studio for years. I started it, got stuck, and there it stayed — a seabird, a dock, a lot of color, and no life in it. Then I took a painting course, and one of the assignments was to dig out an old, tired painting and apply what we were learning. The big lesson was contrast. Light against dark. So I went after this one.

That’s when the bird finally landed. Light picks out the body now — white plumage flaring against the darker passages. One foot hovers just above the dock, a sliver of air between body and surface, wings stretched into a wide diagonal across the frame. That diagonal cuts through a field of fractured color, warm golds and ochres on one side, cool blues and teals on the other. I didn’t want it symmetrical or resolved. I went for tension.

The beak leads, the head tips slightly down, the wings are open but controlled. He’s not showing off. This is function, not display.

The title isn’t about status. It’s about bearing — composure, control, quiet authority. It took a few years, but he earned it.
