This painting has two ways to hang. (It has happened to me once before, with Quantum Fishics.)
Hung vertically, it’s an abstract ship fighting its way through a storm — sails torn, rigging broken, the captain holding the wheel steady until the danger passes.
Turn it sideways and it spells out “Fear Not,” a phrase that keeps repeating itself in my recent paintings. It started as a sketch of our mangroves in my notebook. Only after I brought the sketchbook into the studio did I notice the words. Every letter had shown up, in perfect order, without my conscious intent. The phrase arrived completely unbidden.
I transferred the image to canvas and started painting. I often rotate a canvas as I work, and that’s when the ship in distress emerged from the mangrove forms.
Which orientation suits you best? I’d love to know.
